Westville lies on the Western edge of New Haven and was originally called Westfield, and then Hotchkisstown. Some of the earliest mills in the Colony were built here along the West River. Dominated by the cliffs of West Rock ridge the little village grew into a burgeoning hamlet. Over time the pasture and farm lands were developed into suburban neighborhoods. Two prominent citizens, Donald Grant Mitchell and John Milton Greist, owned two of the city's largest estates here. |
