Just south of Downtown, Oak Street was built along the old East Creek. It was the original landing site of the Puritan Colonists. The are grew rapidly as a merchant neighborhood. The old creek was filled and the area became a slum. Long a melting pot of new immigrants, Oak Street and Legion Avenue were the center of the city's Jewish community. Long Wharf and other wharfs became the center of New Haven's maritine trade. Large areas of the harbor were filled for the railroad. The State's first hospital was built in this area. Over time the hospital and the Yale School of Medicine expanded over much of the neighborhood. |
