The Hill Neighborhood in the Southern part of New Haven was named for a rise in the land. Originally dubbed Mount Pleasant, its name was soon changed to Sodom Hill due to the increasing number of tanneries and surround slums. Much of The Hill was left open for pasture although it experienced early residential development. City Point, the neighborhood's souther terminous used to be a peninsila. It was first named Oyster Point, due to it's early oyster harvesting industry. The Hill was the city's most populous neighborhood and was the center social unrest in the 1960s-70s. |
