The Dixwell & Newhallville neighborhoods make up the north central part of New Haven. The area was first used as pasture and farms until the Farmington Canal was constructed in 1835. Twelve years later it was converted to a railroad. George T. Newhall began to manufacture carriages here and in 1870, Oliver Winchester moved his gun and ammunition plant here. A vast residential neighborhood grew around what was to be the city's largest factory. Dixwell Avenue has been the center of New Haven'sAfrican American community for many years. |
